Mind the Gap: the next step

1 September 2008

Leonard Cheshire Disability has produced a new report which highlights the barriers that disabled people in Scotland face when using public transport and the impact it has on their lives.

‘Mind the Gap: The Next Step’ forms part of the Policy and Campaigns Team’s (PACT) work on the disability poverty agenda, illustrating the poverty of opportunity that results from an inaccessible transport system.

‘Mind the Gap: the next step’ shows that public transport is a gateway to greater freedom and choice, but inaccessible transport denies disabled people the opportunities that most of us take for granted.

The report points out that it is not just the physical inaccessibility of vehicles but also the negative attitudes of staff and passengers which create barriers that discourage disabled people from using public transport.

We hope that the report will not only be an informative read but will also be acted upon, to that end the report sets out many recommendations which would ensure that Scotland’s transport becomes fully accessible for all it’s citizens.
