Can animation show hidden impairments?

21 February 2008

The charity Leonard Cheshire Disability is calling on disabled people to get involved with the next stage of its Creature Discomforts campaign.

The three year Creature Discomforts campaign was launched in November 2007 with six plasticine characters with disabilities, combined with the real voices and experiences of disabled people. The campaign was designed to challenge people to think and act differently about disability.

Flash the Sausage Dog, Tim the Tortoise and Peg the Hedgehog are just three of the characters that were an immediate hit in the media and with the general public. Now the charity is developing the next series of characters that will represent a range of impairments, including ones that are not obvious.

Judith Barnard, Communications Director at Leonard Cheshire Disability, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive feedback from a wide range of people, including teachers, diversity officers, the police and of course from disabled people.

“We are planning our next series and would really love to hear your views on how we can create characters with less obvious impairments such as leaning difficulties, hearing impairments, or mental health problems. Creature Discomforts was created to change the way people see disability and by having a say, you can play a part in that.”
