Inspirational volunteer takes on the Bath Half MarathonInspirational volunteer takes on the Bath Half Marathon
7 December 2011
John is a volunteer at Greenhill House in Timsbury, where he teaches woodwork to residents. In March next year he is taking on the Bath Half Marathon to raise money for the service- in his wheelchair.
John has benefitted from the support offered at Greenhill House in the past. When he first became ill and found himself needing to use a wheelchair, he admits it was very difficult. As well as the support he got from his family, attending the day centre at
Greenhill House helped him to continue living the life he wanted to.
Over time, John started to volunteer at the service, using his skills in woodwork and fishing to give others who use the service the chance to try the activities too.
Taking the challenge
To say thank you to
Greenhill House John is racing the
Bath Half Marathon in March next year to raise money for the charity.
John is really looking forward to taking part in the race. “I used to run half marathons, so it’s a good challenge to do Bath in my wheelchair. I don’t know how long I’ll take to get round this one. I’m looking forward to having a team with me to keep me going on those hills! ”
He doesn’t need to worry too much – the route is designed to avoid the steepest climbs around the city. Renowned for being ‘fast and flat’, the 13.1 mile loop takes in the beautiful heritage centre and river Avon, giving everyone a chance at a personal best or just a great day out.
