Giving people like Karl the support to live they life they want
Karl is 34. He could run 100 metres in 11 seconds and worked as a security guard, before a car crash ten years ago left him with an acquired brain injury and damage to the left side of his body. He was told he was unlikely to ever be able to walk again. After the accident he lived in a nursing home and was also told he would never look after himself. But that was about to change.....
Building a picture of an accessible UK
Picture the scene. You’ve been invited to lunch at a new restaurant. Being a wheelchair-user, you phone ahead to check accessibility. No problem, the manager assures you. So, looking forward to good food and interesting company, you drive to the venue, only to find that leading out of the car park is…a flight of steps. Result: lunch cancelled.
Our School 4 All programme doesn’t just benefit children around the world, it’s also improving opportunities for disabled adults.
Consolata is a Kenyan teacher who is disabled and walks with crutches. She struggled during her schooldays, because teachers in the school she attended thought disabled people were unintelligent. When she started teaching, she came up against more prejudice.‘The head teacher thought my disability affected my brain’ Consolata remembers.
Consolata might easily have given up teaching – but things changed when we started working at her school.
Leonard Holl has cerebral palsy and has been living at Leonard Cheshire Disability's residentail care home Greenacres for seven years.
We asked him some questions about his life and living at the home. Here's what he had to say.....
