Readability 2009-10
Readability is a partnership between primary schools and Leonard Cheshire Disability which promotes literacy, joint fundraising and disability awareness.
Readability encourages pupils to read for pleasure and for purpose. This year’s theme, Space and Other Worlds, coincides with the International Year of Astronomy and the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope.
As well as lots of space related activities and book titles for pupils to enjoy, there are also other exciting literacy based activities that can be completed at home or at school, including word puzzles, drawing, fact finding using encyclopaedias and much more.
Readability has three aims:
Promote Literacy
Readability promotes literacy by providing teachers and each pupil with a free reading Activity Booklet that follows the National Curriculum for primary schools. It is divided by year groups and is filled with fun reading activities. Click here to see last years Activity Book.
Disability Awareness
We want people to change the way they see disability; to think and act differently and to make a positive difference to the lives of disabled people. Some reading activities involve finding out more about disability and the work we do to help disabled people. Our Creature Discomforts website tells pupils more.
Joint Fundraising
We want to create a fundraising partnership, sharing half of all the funds raised by your pupils with your school. We supply your school with all the materials required to run Readability and we both share the proceeds. Readability runs during October 2009, however we recognise and appreciate that you may wish to run it at another time that suits you. We would be delighted to get involved whenever it is most convenient to your school.
Readability is sponsored by
